Police clearance certificates (PCC) cause more confusion than almost any other document we handle — mostly because people don't know which country's certificate they need, or discover the attestation requirement too late. This guide clears it up.
Who Asks for a PCC and Which One
- UAE visa categories (some employment, family and long-term visas) — usually a certificate from your home country or country of previous residence
- Migration to Canada, Australia, Europe — often a UAE PCC covering your years living here
- Some UAE employers and licensing bodies — a UAE PCC
- Rule of thumb: the requesting authority decides; always confirm in writing which country and period they need
How the UAE PCC Works
The UAE police clearance is applied for online or through police smart services, using your Emirates ID and sometimes fingerprints. It covers your record within the UAE. If you've already left the UAE, it's still possible remotely with fingerprint cards — a process we regularly guide clients through.
Home-Country Certificates
Certificates from Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Nepal and elsewhere each follow their own procedure — police headquarters, embassies, fingerprint certification, and their own attestation chain before the UAE accepts them. Timelines range from days to several weeks.
Common Mistakes
- Getting the wrong country's certificate
- Certificate expires (many are valid 3–6 months) before the visa application is submitted
- Missing attestation or translation discovered at submission
- Fingerprints rejected for poor quality
