Your first trip to the UAE should be exciting, not stressful. A little preparation goes a long way — especially at the immigration counter, where having the right documents ready makes the difference between a two-minute stamp and a long conversation.
Documents to Carry in Hand Luggage
Keep these accessible, not in checked baggage
- Passport (6+ months validity) and printed visa copy
- Return or onward ticket confirmation
- Hotel booking or host's address and phone number
- Travel insurance details if you have them
- Some cash for arrival — cards work everywhere, but taxis and small shops love dirhams
At Immigration
Answer simply and honestly: where you're staying, how long, and the purpose of your visit. Officers process thousands of travellers daily — clear, short answers with documents ready make it effortless.
Know Before You Go
- Customs: medicines may need prescriptions; some items (e-cigarettes in quantity, certain foods) have limits — check before packing
- Dress: casual wear is fine in malls and tourist areas; dress modestly at mosques and government offices
- Weather: May–September is extremely hot; plan indoor activities for afternoons
- SIM cards: tourist SIMs are available at the airport with your passport
- Ramadan: eating in public during daylight is restricted in some areas — check dates before travelling
- Friday is a holy day; government offices follow a Monday–Friday week with adjusted hours
